What A Pain in the Back

Lower back pain is one of the most common ailments I hear my clients complain of (next to shoulder pain.) I, myself, suffer from lower back pain thanks to my abnormally curved back (I have my anatomy to blame, see lordosis). However, there could be a number of things causing your lower back pain – tight hamstrings, tight hips, bad posture, bad mattress or it could be something more serious like a herniated disc or kidney disease in which case this post is not for you and you should go to your doctor ASAP! But if this is not the case for you and you just have a tight lower back, here are my favorite stretches to help alleviate this type of discomfort:

  1. Supine Twist. Targets the back muscles.
  2. Figure Four Stretch. Targets the hips, lower back and glutes.
  3. Pigeon Pose. Targets the glutes, groin and psoas.

If you wake up with lower back pain every morning and you are a side sleeper, I would suggest sleeping with a pillow in between your legs. This will prevent your upper leg from pulling your spine out of alignment and reduce stress on your hips and lower back. If you sleep on your back, put a pillow underneath your knees. This will reduce stress on your spine and support the natural curve in your lower back.
