Top Outdoor Activities in Austin
Looking for outdoor activities to stay fit while enjoying everything that makes Austin great? From hiking to team sports, there are so many options for getting active outside the gym. Here are a few of our favorites.
Rec League Sports
A great way to meet new people and enjoy the outdoors is to get involved with a rec league sport. Choose from volleyball, soccer, kickball, pickleball, flag football, softball or baseball and get out there! Whether you were a high school superstar or are a complete beginner, there are teams for your level. Check out The Austin Sports & Social Club to get started.
The Greenbelt
They haven’t completely paved paradise! Even with all of Austin’s growth, we have maintained a series of beautiful Greenbelts that wind through the city. The Barton Creek Greenbelt is over 12 miles long and offers adventures for runners, hikers, mountain bikers, and rock climbers. And although the perma-drought makes it less likely, sometimes you get lucky and find water in the swimming holes!
Lady Bird Lake Hike & Bike Trail
You simply cannot miss one of the crown jewels in Austin’s outdoor fitness life – the Ann and Roy Butler Trail around Lady Bird Lake. This crushed gravel path provides 10 miles of trail for runners, cyclists and walkers. Three bridges make it easy to choose your distance. Over the years, the trail has seen several improvements, including the boardwalk on the southeast side of the lake. A new pedestrian bridge on the far east end near Pleasant Valley is due to open in spring 2026.
Kayaking or Stand-up Paddle Board on Lady Bird Lake
If you’d rather be out on the water than running around it, we have options for you! Rent a kayak or a paddleboard and feel your heart rate elevate and your anxiety diminish. Head out solo, or meet up with friends for a social paddle. Try to spot fish, birds and turtles, and enjoy the view of the skyline from the water. You can even find unique activities like stand-up paddle yoga classes!
Zilker Park
Last but not least, enjoy the outdoors in the beautiful Zilker Park. Home to the annual ACL Fest, on any given day, Zilker’s 350 acres of lush grass are filled with people picnicking, throwing frisbees, flying kites, or playing soccer or volleyball. If you’ve got a dog who loves to fetch, you’ll have plenty of room to let him run. Be sure to come back in December for the Trail of Lights!
