The Austin Simply Fit (ASF) Student Athlete Scholarship Fund was established in honor of late ASF team member Coach DJ Cedent. DJ passed away of sickle cell disease in 2019. He was devoted to the development of all athletes he coached, and we know he would be proud that his legacy offers support to rising student athletes. Meet the 2021 Scholarship awardees here.

The purpose of the Scholarship Fund is to support AISD senior student athletes who have plans to go to college. We are so proud that in its inaugural year, the Scholarship Fund provided $500 scholarships for eight deserving students. In 2022, we increased that number to 10 students.

The Scholarship is funded in large part by ASF’s annual Coach DJ’s Memorial Bench-A-Thon. This community event has in years past raised thousands of dollars to support the Sickle Cell Association of Texas and community members directly. In fact, in its first year, funds raised from the event went directly to help Coach DJ with his medical expenses.

Applications for the 2022 scholarship are now closed.

This year’s Bench-A-Thon was literal tons of fun and a huge success. Our community of clients, coaches and friends came together, lifted all the weight, and met our goal of raising $5,000! We are thrilled to be able to give scholarships to 10 Austin ISD student athletes.

Adam Rossow of Spectrum News did a wonderful piece on how the event honors Coach DJ. Read and watch the story here.

You can help support this effort by sharing this information with the AISD senior student athletes in your life, by participating in next year’s Bench-A-Thon, or by donating to the Fund directly. Please see our Eventbrite page for more information.
