ASF’s MOVE-mber Walking Challenge!

Ahh, Austin, do you feel that? Fresh, cool breezes have replaced the hot humid breath we’ve been living in all summer. It’s officially Outside Weather!

It’s time to prioritize one of the very best things you can do for your health: walking. Walking and other physical activities reduce the risk of all-cause mortality, as well as certain cancers, dementia, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and depression. The best news is that even a small dose can make a big difference

That’s why we’re inviting you to commit to walking 90 minutes each week in the month of November! By starting small but committing 100%, you will achieve consistency, which is the key to success in everything.

You can do three 30 minute walks each week, or try walking your dog for 15 minutes every night. However you fit it in, by December 1 you will have walked 360 minutes. You can track your progress using a FitBit or an app, or just make a simple note for yourself. Your trainer will help you stay accountable by recording your minutes each week.

You may find that you already walk 90 minutes each week – if that’s the case, try aiming for 120 or 150 minutes. Remember the point is consistency over time – don’t go from 0-100 in week 1 and burn out. Commit 100% to a small, realistic goal! Try to keep your walks at a brisk pace – you don’t need to run, but aim to move faster than a stroll.

Anyone who has a regular walking habit will tell you that walking a lot feels really good. We hope that by committing to this practice for a month, it will become a habit for you, one that you will actually enjoy and will stick with forever.

We’re all in this together! Let’s get moving, ASF!
